NK: It’s really crazy to think, obviously, about his stuff on SNL, and his films, and his books. ![]() But towards the end of January everything lined up. A lot of people were telling him about it, but he was working on a show in Connecticut. JM: Marty had done it, Amy Schumer had done it. He had some friends who had done it, so we had some support. Why was Steve Martin the one you decided to tape? JM: He’s so funny. You had dozens of different surprise celebrity guests on during the run of Oh, Hello. If a bit didn’t work, we could just say, "We’re taping this show. The nice thing about George and Gil is that there’s nothing they can’t comment on. I had said that line 135 times at that point, and I blanked on what my line was. ![]() NK: We were doing the first night of the taping, and we were doing a cross at the beginning of the show. We’ve done this 200 times, but this is filmed." I was in my head a little, filming it-but watching it, I thought, Oh, this really got the energy of it. ![]() Does knowing that you’re taping change the experience of performing in a Broadway show? JM: It does. ![]()
